Alternative Teacher Certification
In the United States alternative forms of teacher certification have been having a major impact on teaching, as an occupation in recent years. As alternative forms of teacher certification have been growing since the 1980’s more diverse, more experienced teachers, have been seeking out these alternative programs to gain proper certification. There has been a swift growth of individual providers of alternative teacher certification programs within each state. This alternative certification is a great opportunity to get non-traditional populations into the field of education and these new teachers will provide the educational opportunity in a diverse way to the students within the district.
In the last 10 years alternative teacher certification has evolved as a respected concept and has allowed many individuals with a bachelor’s degree who have successful careers outside of education to join the teacher’s work force. One of the main reasons in recent years for alternative teacher certifications has been an increase in an older generation of work force wanting to change career paths and join the teacher’s workforce.
There are literally hundreds of different kinds of alternative teacher certification for anyone that has a bachelor’s degree and is looking to become an educator in the school system. All states and districts will have a different perception of “traditionally” trained teachers and teachers who have obtained “alternative” teacher certification so making sure that you have done your research on how the district will perceive your training is an essential part of the process. In the end though there is an immense demand for high quality teachers in certain subject matters and there is a giant population of non-traditionally educated candidates waiting for the opportunity to assume these teacher positions.
Alternative avenues must exist to allow individuals who have obtained a bachelors degree to enter the field of education. Since the law in the United States is set that any individual that wants to become a teacher must first obtain a bachelors degree, teaching license and the proper credentials these alternate paths must exist to increase the individual population of educators to the workforce. What matters the most is not if your teacher is “non-traditionally” or “traditionally” educated to become a teacher. Ultimately what is most important is that all teachers are educated and inspired to deliver the highest quality educational opportunity possible to their students.
